I took off ... from a field of Pakistan. The missile site was 3 hours trip, but about 75 minutes into the mission I saw familiar circular graded contours. We had no idea that this test site even existed.
Large tower held a large object on top, and there were signs of activity around huge blockhouse two miles away.
...
Three hours later I was over Omsk, then I turned east to head for the missile test site.
...
I expected to be received as a hero for having uncovered a Soviet nuclear test site. Instead I was told "There is no atomic test facility in that part of Russia".
Next day however they apologize: "Nuclear bomb was detonated from that tower less than two hours after you flew over it".
